57¢ in 1977 would be $2.41 today. That’s about spot on, at least for me.

Hmm, despite being much newer than what you usually post, I’m pretty sure there about a zero chance that still exists. Gas stations really aren’t sentimental about interesting design, and are subject to a whole bunch of safety and environmental regulations that make it difficult to keep old stuff around.

I’m sure it’s long gone. It’s not a very substantial building in the first place. I was more interested in the lighting. These sort of photos look fantastic in B&W with the older film cameras.

I like the cigarette vending machine next to the gas pump.

I haven’t seen a cigarette vending machine in years, though I remember them well. I thought they had banned them in the US, but it looks like they can still be found in bars or other places with age-restricted entry.

Sometimes design mat ters. This station , at the corner of Slauson and La Brea, isn’t that old, but obviously the architecture was important.

It’s probably true that most old, simple stations are long gone, and that’s kind of sad. I like the classic stations like in the original post since I believe that good design doesn’t need to be large, fancy of ornate. Then there are the classic ones, like this one in Beverly Hills that's  across from city hall, that are landmarks because of their over-the-top design and will be saved for years. Nothing simple about it...

Last I saw one of these they dispensed little hand- painted art pieces.
